What is Tallow? Tallow is purified beef fat. The inclusion of animal fats and extracts have been used for thousands of years in skincare by our Ancestors. OG’s like Queen Cleopatra of Egypt even had special beauty routines from these animal extracts in skincare, think Cleopatra’s famous milk Baths and special ointments, Goatmilk creams and soaps, milk creams, lanolin etc.
Tallow is considered one of the earlier original skincare ingredient used in the Olden Days, it was one of the ingredients added to their skincare- and for good reason too- it protected against all kinds of harsh weather conditions and our ancestors managed to always have good skin due to its use.
Research has shown why this is; Tallow is incredibly compatible with our skin, with both having a similar fatty-acid profile. It contains the same fats or lipids found in healthy, supple human skin. Lipids are beneficial because they create a protective, yet permeable barrier that prevents infection, maintains moisture, flexibility and structure of the cell.
Tallow is believed to prevent dryness at the cellular level without suffocating the skin's barrier as does petroleum-based lotions.
Tallow protects the skin in a way no plant fat can, because of the similarity it bears with the human cell membranes. It is easily absorbed into the skin, providing optimum protection, where most plant based fats simply sit atop the skin, hard to penetrate into it.
Tallow is also rich in nutrients that make for youthful skin. It’s rich in vitamins A, D & K and antioxidants, one of which is vitamin E, known to promote rejuvenation of the skin by fighting free radicals that can cause wrinkles. Vitamin E has also been shown to prevent the breakdown of collagen.
Tallow fell out of the mainstream spotlight as Americans migrated towards a “fat-free” lifestyle. Additionally, it became cheaper and easier for commercial skincare companies to add petroleum- and water-based fillers to products rather than packing products full of healthy fats such as tallow.
Tallow is also non-comedogenic which means it is highly absorbent, and won't clog your pores making it perfect for even acne prone and oily skin. Our whipped Tallow body butter contains another non-comedogenic skin loving oil- sunflower oil, and calendula infused sunflower oil for the healing properties of calendula- and has been expertly whipped to create a light, fluffy texture that melts effortlessly into your skin. With added vitamin E for the protection from free radicals, this body butter provides deep hydration and nourishment that lasts all day. Your skin will love this product!
If you have sensitive skin and have struggled with inflamed skin, look no further, grab a jar or two and your skin’ll thank you!
